About This Position

Position Overview The HDD Operator I – Utility Construction is responsible for operating Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) equipment used to install underground utilities and infrastructure in the power, telecommunications, water, and sewer markets. The HDD Operator I assists with all aspects of HDD operations, including equipment setup, bore operations, steering, utility locating, site preparation, cleanup, and basic labor duties. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively around existing utilities in both rural and urban environments. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Operate Horizontal Directional Drilling equipment for the installation of underground conduit, cable, and other utilities. Safely operate and control the directional bore while following planned bore profiles, alignment, depth, and grade requirements. Monitor drilling operations and make appropriate steering adjustments based on job plans, ground conditions, and bore requirements. Operate construction equipment to facilitate the alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to meet grade and alignment specifications. Maintain accurate bore profile plots and provide directional drilling data to customers and supervisors as required. Read utility locates and assist with daylighting existing underground facilities. Identify and communicate potential utility conflicts, hazards, and changing ground conditions. Perform equipment inspections and routine maintenance, including greasing, oiling, and minor repairs as necessary. Follow all company, manufacturer, and industry safety procedures and standards. Attend and actively participate in required safety meetings and training. Assist with all aspects of the job, including basic labor responsibilities and general site preparation. Assist with the proper setup and cleanup of the work site, including traffic and pedestrian control measures. Operate vehicles and construction equipment as directed and when properly trained or certified. Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Protect existing utilities and prevent damage to new or existing infrastructure. Assist crew members and provide training or guidance to employees learning HDD operations when qualified. Represent PUSH Incorporated in a professional and positive manner when interacting with coworkers, supervisors, customers, and the public. Identify opportunities to improve work processes, safety, productivity, and overall operations. Perform other duties as assigned. What We're Looking For Positive attitude and strong work ethic. Experience working around underground utilities in rural and urban environments. Familiarity with Horizontal Directional Drilling equipment and operations. Familiarity with Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar HDD equipment preferred. Familiarity with different types of locating equipment preferred. Working knowledge of underground utility construction procedures. Ability to understand bore profiles, job plans, and construction prints. Understanding of ground conditions and their impact on drilling and boring operations. Strong safety awareness and commitment to safe work practices. Ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew. Ability to accept changing job-site conditions and manage adversity. Ability and patience to assist with training and mentoring other employees. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Requirements High school diploma or GED. Demonstrated field experience working with HDD crews. Previous utility construction experience preferred. Familiarity with HDD equipment and locating equipment preferred. General knowledge of underground utility construction procedures. Ability to understand construction prints, bore profiles, and utility locates. Ability to safely operate assigned equipment when trained and qualified. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to travel and work away from home for extended periods of time. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to sit for extended periods of time. Ability to walk, stand, bend, twist, stoop, push, pull, carry, and lift as required. Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 75 pounds. Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs while performing skilled movements. Ability to pass required pre-employment screening. Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
